Two women, including a foreign national, were allegedly raped near the Hampi heritage site in Karnataka while a male tourist who was with them was found dead. He was reported missing after the group which attacked them pushed him into the Tungabhadra River canal on Thursday night.

The Gangavathi Rural police have registered a case of rape, robbery, assault and attempt to murder against three unidentified men in the wake of the incident in Koppal district’s Anegundi region which is popular among backpackers.

According to the information, the incident happened on Thursday night at around 10.30 pm. The attackers carried out this incident near Sanapur lake. The victim told the police that at the time of the incident, everyone was sitting near Sanapur lake to listen to music, when three bike riders reached there and inquired about petrol. When they told that there is no petrol pump nearby, the accused then demanded Rs 100 from the tourists.

When they refused to give money, the accused started abusing them. When the others protested, they pushed three boys into a nearby canal and then gang-raped the two women. Two people were seriously injured after being thrown into the canal, while one tourist is missing. The missing man is named Bibash. He is from Odisha.

The complainant stated that the attackers pushed the male tourists – American Daniel Pitas, 23; Pankaj Patil, 42, from Nasik in Maharashtra; and Bibash, 26, from Odisha – into the canal before raping her and a 27-year-old Israeli woman. Bibash is reported to be missing.
