U.S. President Donald Trump is facing a lot of backlash after he reacted by questioning the brutality of the murder of a Ukrainian refugee and light rail train employee, Iryna Zarutska, who was stabbed to death in Charlotte. Zarutska, a 23-year-old woman, had escaped her war-torn homeland in search of refuge in the United States, only to be murdered on August 22 by a 34-year-old ex-convict, homeless, but by the name of Decarlos Brown Jr.
The tragic event took place late at night, when Zarutska entered the train at 9:46 pm., dressed in her uniform from the pizzeria, seen on the surveillance footage published by Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), where she sits quietly and scrolls on her phone as Brown sits right behind her. Four minutes later, Brown, without warning, drew a folding knife and jumped forward, stabbing Zarutska three times, at least one of them in the neck. In the video released, however, the moment of stabbing is not mentioned.
On Saturday, September 7, Trump was requested to comment at an event in Maryland. His brief remark, “Horrible… I will find out everything by tomorrow morning,” was the popular word on social media, which caused anger among those who felt that it was a dismissive reaction.
Critics on the internet have accused Trump as well as the mainstream media of minimising the murder. Others emphasised the racial aspects, that the suspect was a Black person and the victim was a White refugee, which allegedly made a difference in the further coverage. One of the users said, “In case Iryna Zarutska was Jewish, Trump would call in the National Guard and push new antisemitism bills. Rather, we receive ‘following up on the situation.’ Some of them were wondering how local authorities had not detected Zarutska in spite of her criminal background, when Brown had a criminal background.
The killing has brought back controversy regarding the general safety in the community, racial bias in the news reporting, and the sufficiency of the political leaders in dealing with violent offences.
