On Thursday, US President Donald Trump delivered a sharp warning to the increasing conflict between Russia and Ukraine saying that the war might escalate into a third world war should it not be contained. In an interview with journalists at the White House, Trump emphasized the necessity to stop the violence stating that almost 25,000 individuals, primarily soldiers, though civilians as well, were killed in the last one month.
Trump said: I would like to have the killing cease. Last month twenty-five thousand people were dead… I would love to see it stop.” He further explained that the United States is trying its best to facilitate in ending the conflict and ensuring that its escalation does not continue.
According to Trump, there are times when the world is experiencing tensions and wrong geopolitical calculations, which led to bigger conflicts. This falls under the category of things that go to the third world war, he said, and based on the fact that the situation could escalate to the point that the world powers or even regional actors were able to control further. He made it clear that the war in Ukraine does not pose a direct threat to the United States but the threat is realized in case the war becomes complicated.
To combat the issue of America in the war, Trump repeated the point that the US is not involved in the war on the military front but only involved in diplomatic talks since people want us there. In his opinion, Ukraine and European countries want Washington to contribute to the negotiation of the cessation of the fighting.
Another person Hlighted by Trump was the financial cost that the US has incurred since the war started claiming that the country contributed Ukraine with $300-350 billion and got little back. In comparison, he stated that in the past under his watch, the US had previously had access to rare earth materials without using money.
He further mentioned that the US currently sells its weapons to NATO at a full price with the alliance likely to sell the weapons to Ukraine.
