Standing accused of indifference to antisemitism, former President Donald Trump wasn’t slow to denounce it on Thursday, following a CNN report on the antisemitic comments made by North Carolina gubernatorial candidate Mark Robinson, one of Trump’s cronies. Robinson, the Lt. Governor of North Carolina, gave out a series of racial and sexual statements on the platform where he identified himself as a ‘’black NAZI. ” Despite this disgusting move, Robinson stood his ground and defended his stand, insisting that he would not quit the race.
Instead, Robinson was avoiding any direct connection with the Trump campaign while the campaign was fully aware of the importance of North Carolina for their plan to regain the White House. Robinson has previously received Trump’s backing, which has turned into the recognition of Robinson as a future Republican star due to a series of statements about race and abortion. Nonetheless, in the speech to a group of Jewish donors and the Israeli-American Council in Washington, Trump did not directly address Robinson’s comments.
Instead, the Trump campaign put out a statement in which it insisted that all the attention is still on the White House while making sure to note that North Carolina plays a crucial role in that effort but made no reference to Robinson’s name. This omission aroused attention, especially with the reported words of Robinson, including a statement he made in 2012 where he said he would prefer having Adolf Hitler than the leadership in Washington. These statements are quite different from Trump’s statements about anti-Semitism and his allegations against Vice President Kamala Harris as supporting Israel’s foes.
Romney was not the only one concerned about Trump’s chances in North Carolina – Paul Shumaker, a Republican pollster, explained that Robinson’s controversies could pose a danger to Trump in the state he won in both the last and the one before the last election. After that, a spokesman of Harris’ campaign posted a photo of Trump side by side with Robinson and wrote, “Donald Trump has a Mark Robinson problem. ”
