US President Donald Trump pledged it would be a ‘liberating day’ for the United States as he reaffirmed his commitment to trigger reciprocal tariffs on April 2. With this plan, the US will tax the imported goods in the same ratio as imported goods face in the US market against American ones. Trump has been clear that no country is exempt from these trade actions.
“Our country is liberated on April 2. No one knew you were gonna put $100 billion on the table,” Trump said Sunday. “We’re getting back some of the wealth that very, very foolish presidents gave away because they had no clue what they were doing. The US will retaliate by placing tariffs on countries that levy them and will also tack on tariffs on such key industries as autos, steel, and aluminum,” he added.
The US already has 20% tariff on Chinese imports and 25% duties for steel and aluminum products. On March 6, when Trump temporarily suspended a 25 percent tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods that temporarily kicked in as part of the North American trade deal, he provided automakers a one-month concession. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that this suspension came after voters — what Leavitt called voters — conversations between Trump and what she said were executives from Ford, General Motors and Stellantis encouraging them to move production lines from Canada or Mexico to the U.S. or redirect the production lines.
India’s Response to Trump’s Tariffs
In his first address to Congress in his second term, Trump also singled out India as a nation to criticise for imposing ‘very high’ and ‘unfair’ tariffs on US goods. He alleged that India charges us auto tariffs at 100% and above.
Ironically, India’s BJP-led NDA government clarified in Parliament last week that the US has not yet implemented reciprocal tariffs on India. Both countries are, however, negotiating the trade agreement to increase market access, lower tariffs, reduce non-tariff barriers and increase supply chain integration.
