Students who intend to seek tertiary education in foreign countries are considering more destinations beyond the United States, given that the Trump administration is doing everything to reduce foreign enrollment in American colleges. The legal status of thousands of foreign students has been cancelled by the U.S. government, and it is proceeding with deportations based on both grounds of political activism, such as pro-Palestine protests, but also minor criminal violations, such as traffic offences. Moreover, the government has suspended any new appointment of student visas and implemented the tightening of the vetting process, such as social media account review of the applicants.
Such actions have been projected to come as a big blow to U.S. universities and the economy as a whole. New enrollments in American institutions under Trump may decrease 30 to 40 per cent this fall, according to an analysis conducted by an organisation devoted to international education, NAFSA. The loss would be valued at an estimate of the $7 billion lost in terms of economic contributions, say, tuition fees, accommodation costs, among other expenses, by the foreign students.
The change has provided other countries with the opportunity to recruit the students who are in search of more accommodating environments. The United Kingdom, which already has the second most popular international education destination, is likely to stand to gain the most. Even with the intentions of the Labour government to curb migration by putting restrictions on the post-study work visas, admission experts indicate that the UK is still considered more accepting than other leading destinations such as Canada and Australia.
This trend is highlighted by current data. This autumn, the UK has enjoyed a 2.2 per cent surge in international applications, and Chinese students spurred much of that growth, according to a report, with an unprecedented 10 per cent rise in Chinese applicants. The CEO of Illume Student Advisory Services, Mike Henniger, said that a humongous loss has been suffered by the American brand, and the one that is gaining the advantage is the UK.
