Current polls show eroding voter trust in the ruling party, the Liberal Party, led by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and the coalition partner, the New Democratic Party, led by Jagmeet Singh. The survey conducted by Leger for the National Post studies that NDP has slipped from almost 18 percent backing for the 2021 federal vote to its current 17 percent. Far more dangerous for the NDP, the negative shift was worse than the positive shift; 32 percent of the respondents claimed to have gotten a worse impression of the party and Singh over the specified period.

The NDP’s problems were transparent when it contested the June federal by-election for Toronto-St. Paul, where its vote share shrunk to as low as 11% from the previous 17%, harvesting a heavy loss for Trudeau’s party, which formerly occupied the place since 1993. Jagmeet Singh succeeded as the NDP leader in October 2017; he came to power by adopting the party that occupied 44 seats in the House of Commons and nearly 20% vote shares. Those numbers had dipped down to 25 of the seats and about 18% votes by 2021.

Singh explained the past electoral losses as the expression of those voters’ anger at Trudeau and disappointment in the Liberals after they had been governing for nine years without significant changes. However, existing criticism from the Congress of the NDP does mean that Trudeau’s minority government functioning is upheld with the support from the NDP obtained in March 2022 by means of the ‘supply and confidence’ deal.

Singh has not pledged to keep supporting Trudeau, stressing further discontent with the present government’s performance. In the general poll, 41 % of people support the Conservative Party, and it has a considerable lead over the Liberal Party, which has only 27% of people’s support, as denoted by the Leger poll. Today the Conservatives would be in a position to grab 218 seats, unlike the Liberal party, likely to win 67.

The voter base in the Canadian political system is still dynamic, and based on the general voting pattern, it seems like both the Liberals and the NDP are losing ground while the Conservatives are growing stronger, implying that both the Liberal and the NDP parties are facing serious challenges in their preparation for the next elections.
