A tourist boat carrying 53 people, including five crew members, capsized in Vietnam’s Halong Bay on Saturday, killing three people. The accident has claimed at least 18 lives and left dozens missing after a vessel carrying 48 passengers and five crew members capsized in a UNESCO World Heritage site. The tragedy, reported by Dan Tri news, occurred due to sudden and heavy rainfall, which quickly overwhelmed the boat.

The majority of those on board were families from the capital city of Hanoi, with a heartbreaking count of over 20 children among the passengers, according to a report from VNExpress. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the inherent dangers of unpredictable weather, even in popular tourist destinations.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh sent his condolences to the families of the deceased and called on the defense and public security ministries to conduct urgent search and rescue.

Authorities would “investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations”, a statement on the government website said.
