Islamabad: Thousands of supporters from the main politico-religious party of Pakistan rallied in the capital, Islamabad, Sunday against Israel’s bombing of Palestinians in Gaza, chanting anti-American slogans and accusing the US of “backing the aggressor”.
Stern action by the authorities the previous night forced the religious party to modify its program and hold the rally in a major street well away from the protected area. Because of the plan announced by Jammat-e-Islami and the risk of violence, the US Embassy issued an advisory for American citizens living in Islamabad and the surrounding area to limit unnecessary travel on Sunday.
Earlier on Sunday, Israeli warplanes carried out airstrikes near Gaza’s largest hospital, which is packed with patients and tens of thousands of Palestinians seeking shelter, residents said. Israel has said Gaza’s militant Hamas rulers have a command post under the hospital, without providing much evidence.
Pakistan recently announced plans to deport all migrants who are in the country illegally. Although the authorities have confirmed that the action is not targeting Afghans specifically but all those living illegally in the nation. The immigrants include 1.7 million Afghans and Islamabad said all migrants without valid papers, including the Afghans.
Meanwhile, nearly three dozen trucks entered Gaza on Sunday in the largest ever aid convoy since the war between Israel and Hamas began. Despite this, the humanitarian workers said that the assistance still fell desperately short of the needs of thousands of people broke into warehouses. The Gaza health ministry said that the death toll among Palestinians passed 8000 mostly women and minors. Communications though restored to much of Gaza, the besieged enclave’s 2.3 million people are largely cut off from the world. With this, UN on Sunday warned of growing hunger and desperation in Gaza.
