Thailand PM: A major development has come to light in Thailand’s politics, where Thailand’s Prime Minister, Patongtarn Shinawatra, was suspended after the audio of a phone call with Cambodia’s former PM was leaked. The court took this decision while considering the allegations of ethical violation, in which seven judges voted in favor of her suspension, while two opposed it. The judges voted 7 to 2 in favor of suspending the PM till the investigation is over. On the other hand, Thailand’s King on Tuesday approved the appointments of new cabinet members in the government regarding the coalition government caught in crisis.

The matter escalated when a clash broke out between Thailand and Cambodia on May 28 during a border dispute, in which a Cambodian soldier was killed. Meanwhile, an audio of Patongtarn’s conversation with Hun Sen surfaced, in which she calls Sen ‘uncle’ and assures him that his demands will be taken care of. This conversation took place in the presence of a senior Thai military officer. This recording caused great public outrage, and protests began.

Following this, there was an uproar in Thailand, and protests began demanding the resignation of the Prime Minister. Thousands of protesters took to the streets in Bangkok and started demanding the resignation of Patongtarn. The protesters allege that the Prime Minister has compromised Thailand’s sovereignty and national security. Many people believe that he showed more leniency towards Cambodia on the sensitive issue of border dispute.

Patongtarn Shinawatra said she would accept and follow the process, although she did not want her work to be disrupted. “I am concerned about this matter,” she said. Patongtarn is also facing an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Commission office for alleged code of conduct violations.

After the phone call was leaked, the major party Bhumjaithai withdrew support from Thailand’s coalition government. After this, on Tuesday, Thailand’s King Maha Vajiralongkorn approved the new cabinet of Prime Minister Patongtarn Shinawatra. Former Deputy Prime Minister and Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charvirakul has been removed from the new cabinet. He had left the coalition government due to the audio leak. Phumthum Vechaiyachai has been appointed in place of Anutin. Phumthum was the Defense Minister. He will now also take charge of the Home Ministry.

Apart from this, the post of Defense Minister has been left vacant. The Deputy Defense Minister has been made the acting minister. PM Shinawatra Pantogtarn took over the post of Culture Minister. She said that she wants to promote Thai culture at the global level.
