Thailand-Cambodia War: The escalation of a dispute between the two South East Asian neighbours, Thailand and Cambodia have killed at least 12 people, Thai authorities say.
The dispute that dates back more than a century has displaced more than one lakh people along the Cambodia border. Most of the casualties were civilians from three Thai provinces, according to Thailand’s army, which also reported that several people were wounded. Cambodia has yet to confirm whether it suffered any casualties.
The dispute escalated when on July 23, the Royal Thai Army discovered a landmine that injured five soldiers. “The Royal Thai Army has condemned Cambodia over the landmine incident at Chong An Ma, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani, that injured 5 soldiers, 1 severely. The Army has prepared under the “Chakraphong Phuwanat” plan. This violates international humanitarian principles, wrote Thai Government on X.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister’s Office in Cambodia condemned the use of cluster munitions by Thai Forces along their border.
Despite the de-escalation measures that have been taken since past few months, tit-for-tat measures by both nations continued, like banning exports and Thailand threatening to cut off electricity to Cambodia. Thailand has closed its border with Cambodia, while Cambodia has downgraded its ties with Thailand, accusing its military of using “excessive force”. Both countries have asked their citizens near the 800 kilometer long border to leave the areas, with Thailand evacuating 40,000 civilians to safer locations.
