In a heated last face-to-face meeting on Wednesday, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and the Leader of the opposition party, Keir Starmer, clashed before the vote next week. This particular head-to-head was the most vicious; both leaders went for each other’s and their parties’ jugulars. Given that the Conservatives were about 20 points behind Labour, Sunak focused on presenting the party as a viable and forceful opposition with extensive policies on topics including migration, taxes, and women’s rights, which Starmer lied to the nation about. There, he urged other voters not to relinquish the opportunity to vote for the Labour Party.

Starmer, on the other hand, accused Sunak of being out of touch with the hard-working population, stating that he is too rich. He stressed that the prime minister did not have a clue as to how struggling families lived their lives to the fullest. An online poll conducted by YouGov just after the debate showed that it was 50-50 with both leaders.

Regarding the immigration issue, which remains precarious for the British population, Sunak denied Starmer’s proposal to repatriate immigrants. Sunak quickly countered such an argument, noting it was unlikely given that the flows originate from countries such as Iran, Syria and Afghanistan. “Is he going to sit down with the Iranian Ayatollah? Are you going to try and do a deal with the Taliban? It is completely nonsensical…You are taking people for fools,” Sunak fired back.

The current opinion surveys reveal that Starmer’s Labour Party is likely to win decisively, possibly by rejecting the Conservative domination for the past 14 years. During the campaign election, both leaders met for polls and voters’ meetings several times, and lately, appeals have been made mostly concerning the ability of the candidate to govern the country.

Starmer claimed the nation is tired after 14 years of Conservative disorder, and he pointed to his better grasp of many households’ challenges due to rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis.
