It was a win for Sudan’s military on Monday as the Republican Palace in Khartoum was successfully retaken by its troops, marking another success in the ongoing fight with its opponent – Sudan’s paramilitary rival Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The development comes almost two years after the fighting that has devastated the country since the war started in April 2023.
Sudanese soldiers inside the palace grounds declared victory on the 21st day of Ramadan, on a Friday. A Sudanese military officer, as he trooped in a captain’s epaulettes on one of the videos, confirmed that troops had regained the compound. As Sudan’s government and iconic palace, depicted on banknotes and postage stamps, the palace appeared partially in ruins. Broken tiles crunch under the boots of armed soldiers, screaming, “God is the greatest!” as they stomped around with assault rifles and rocket-propelled grenade launchers in the footage.
It is a major battlefield gain for Sudan’s military, which has been winning ground under the leadership of Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan, the head of the army. This is the fall of the Republican Palace, the expulsion of RSF forces from Khartoum and the ring-closing on the capital by the army with the bloodied aftermath of the capital’s bloody urban war lingering.
But the convoy to Khartoum merely followed in the tracks of an earlier one that had led to the loss of the fortress by the RSF, headed by Gen. Mohammed Hamdan Dagalo, and this is not news that its central committee has officially announced. However, the battle is not over, as the RSF and its coalition remain in other parts of Sudan, where they control territories. Late Thursday, however, the RSF said it had forced its way into the strategic desert city of al-Maliha in North Darfur. Sudan’s military has confirmed fighting has been going on in the area but has not conceded it. The war-torn country is seeing the conflict endure by shifting back and forth, and both sides vying for control over key regions of the country.
