TOKYO: An earthquake of magnitude 6.1 jolted Japan on Friday evening said a public broadcaster adding that there was no tsunami warnings issued. The quake was felt 107 km east-southeast of Tokyo, Japan, at around 3.33 pm. The depth of the earthquake was centered off the east coast of Chiba Peninsula at a depth of 44.5 kilometers, according to the National Center for Seismology.
The temblor rattled buildings in Tokyo as well as Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures, according to local media.
The last earthquake was reported on May 5. A strong earthquake hit central Japan, killing at least one person and injuring more than 20 others.
Located in the world’s most seismically active area, Japan accounts for about one-fifth of the world’s earthquakes of magnitude 6 or greater.
The country witnessed the strongest earthquake 12 years ago on March 11, 2011. The northeast coast was struck by a magnitude 9 earthquake.
