Colombo: Amidst crises, Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa fled from his residence as protestors on Saturday barged into the house. Video footage from local TV news showed some protesters, holding Sri Lankan flags and helmets, breaking into the president’s residence. “The President was escorted to safety,” the source said, adding that troops fired in the air to prevent angry crowds from overrunning the President’s Palace.
Earlier on Saturday, the police had fired tear gas at protesters demanding the Sri Lankan President and his entire government resign as the island nation tackles the worst economic crisis since its independence. Thousands of demonstrators were seen carrying Sri Lanka’s national flag while some even rode on vehicles to protest an acute fuel shortage.
In the conflict today morning, at least seven individuals, including two police officials were injured and hospitalized.
