Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on becoming Supreme Leader of Iran and also for the death of his father and predecessor Ali Khamenei. This development is timed when tension is on the rise in the Middle East due to constant military attacks by the United States and Israel.
In a post that was sent on a social media site, X, on Tuesday, Sharif congratulated Mojtaba Khamenei on assuming the duties of the Supreme Leader of Iran. He also sent his condolence over the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei who was allegedly killed in Israeli- US attacks in Tehran last month. Sharif stressed that, the Pakistan-Iran relations are very strong based on the faith, history, culture and the linguistic ties.
The Pakistani prime minister renewed their pledge to enhance collaboration with Tehran in different areas. According to him, Pakistan would like to continue its close cooperation with Iran in order to foster bilateral relations and ensure reciprocal advantages of both countries.
The Assembly of Experts, a 88-member clerical body charged with the responsibility of picking the highest authority of Iran, appointed Mojtaba Khamenei, the son of the late Iranian leader, as the new Supreme Leader. His appointment was announced more than a week after Ali Khamenei was assassinated by Iranian state media.
This reaction of the Pakistan side is indicative of its fragile diplomatic stance amid the going on conflict in the region. Islamabad has also remained in support of Iran throughout the crisis even though the country has had a longstanding economic and strategic relationship with the United States. Meanwhile, Pakistan still enjoys close relationships with Saudi Arabia that has been exposed to increasing tension and counter retaliatory threats by Iran as a result of the existence of US installations in the area. This balancing strategy underscores the struggle of Pakistan to maneuver within complicated relationships in a highly unstable geo-political context.
