Gwoza: In the north-eastern part of Nigeria, a sequence of deadly suicide attacks on Saturday led to the unfortunate happenings of at least 18 people killed and 19 others seriously injured, as claimed by the operational responders’ agencies. These events took place in Gwoza, and one bombing happened during the wedding; a woman suicide bomber with explosives tied to her back attacked, according to Police.

Other suicide attacks were directed to the hospital and a funeral in a border town near Cameroon, which made a set of awful events marked on this day. The Borno State SEMA said that the total number of deaths from the attacks was 18, with 42 people succumbing to injuries.

Barkindo Saidu, head of SEMA, described the grim toll: “To date, it has claimed 18 lives with victims including children, men, females and pregnant women, according to AFP.” Twenty-two people died, and 19 others were critically burned and taken to Maiduguri, the regional capital; it was reported there were 23 more akin to burn patients awaiting their turn to be evacuated — the level of humanitarian need shown here should speak for itself.

This was evidenced by an incident where a militia man assisting the military in Gwoza said some of their people died while attacking a security post, an account whose authenticity was yet to be authenticated by the military in a fraction of the time.

Wulari Gazau, which was captured by Boko Haram fighters during a preceding territorial campaign in the northern part of Borno state in 2014, was later reclaimed by Nigerian troops with assistance from their Chad in 2015. Nevertheless, these attempts have been continued by the group, and they have been attacked from the fortified positions in the mountains.

This insurgency has caused immense loss of innocent lives and displacement, whereby Boko Haram has killed over 40,000 people and displaced about two million people in Nigeria’s northeast. The aftermath of the conflict has already reached neighbouring countries of Niger, Cameroon, and Chad; therefore, nowadays, a joint regional military force with the purpose of combating the activities of the militants and providing stability has been formed.
