For a second consecutive day, Israeli forces have entered al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza, breaching the medical complex from the southern part. The situation is dire, with reports indicating that Israeli bulldozers and tanks advanced inside, damaging the facility’s wall. Medical personnel, including doctors, are reportedly being interrogated.
The initial Israeli incursion occurred on Wednesday, characterized as a “targeted” operation following days of encirclement and bombardment. Israel alleges that al-Shifa is a Hamas command center but hasn’t provided evidence. Hamas denies the accusations, inviting UN investigators to verify.
Despite the hospital being a civilian facility, the United States echoes Israel’s claim that al-Shifa is a Hamas “military headquarters.” President Joe Biden urged Israel to exercise caution, emphasizing concern over operations in al-Shifa.
The UN Security Council passed a resolution on Wednesday, calling for “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza, which Israel rejected. Israel’s UN Ambassador, Gilad Erdan, dismissed the resolution as having “no meaning” and being “disconnected from reality.”
On Thursday, Israel conducted an airstrike on the Gaza house of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, justifying it as a location where senior Hamas leaders directed attacks. Overnight, Israeli forces struck various locations in north and central Gaza, resulting in reported deaths, including strikes on residential buildings in Nuseirat refugee camp.
The situation remains highly tense and complex, with conflicting narratives between Israel, Hamas, and the international community. The continued military actions have also raised many concerns about the humanitarian impact on the civilian population in Gaza.
