A drone strike on a passenger bus in northern Ukraine killed nine civilians and injured four more people, Ukrainian military authorities said on Saturday. The Russians deliberately attacked a civilian bus, as Ukrainian officials called the strike inexcusable and unprovoked.
The Sumy Regional Military Administration reported on the incident in a Telegram post, saying that “regrettably, several civilians were killed as a result of a strike on a passenger bus conducted by Russian forces.” The death toll later rose from eight to nine, and four more people were wounded in the attack.
A Russian drone reportedly downed the bus while it was traveling through the region, marking just the latest component of a general campaign by Moscow to disrupt essential services and infrastructure in Ukraine. The assault forms part of a recent trend in Russia’s campaign of drone and missile attacks against civilian areas, leading to mounting concern about the disregard for humanitarian regulations during wartime.
The victims were taken to hospitals for immediate medical attention. The local authorities and first responders quickly responded to provide aid and deal with the aftermath of the attack.
The Ukrainian government has strongly criticized the incident, describing it as further proof of Moscow’s flagrant violation of the protection of innocent people. The international community is starting to voice its concern following the escalating impact of the war, which has already lasted over two and a half years.
The incident in Sumy underscores the importance of Ukraine’s efforts to strengthen its anti-drone capabilities in the face of the continuous threat posed by such aircraft and the ongoing help it receives from its partners around the world.
