After a series of allegations of intrusion into Ukrainian territory of foreign mercenaries with French inclusion, Ministers of defense of Russia and France brought their discussions to the phone on April 3, setting the main issues on their agenda. After exchanging some nods, the discussion is alleged to have continued for an hour at least. During the talks, the Russian authorities warned their French counterparts of the possible practical consequences of the president of France’s words regarding ships of Ukraine. Besides, both sides also contemplated the two days of Moscow terror.
The phone conversation between the defense ministers of Russia and France emerges against the backdrop of escalating tensions surrounding Ukraine. Amid reports of foreign mercenaries, purportedly including individuals from France, entering Ukrainian territory, the interaction between the two defense officials assumes significant importance.
Hosted in Paris, the seventy-minute call on 3 April was used as a dialogue on both French and Russian options for solving the remaining problems. First of all, it was the issue of the Russian warning announced publicly against the realization of the announcement reportedly made by Macron concerning the sending of troops to Ukraine. The warning thus is an indication of Russia’s stand on what can be a dangerous and unwarranted action that may lead to military intervention in the region.
In the same way, the dialogue between the defense ministers went beyond the Ukraine contextual situation and also embraced recent situations such as the Moscow terror attack. To a large extent, the reiteration of the areas of captivity of Russia and France in security issues, including but not limited to Ukraine, for their own nations, reveals their shared stance.
