National elections in the United Kingdom began today on July 4, 2024. Current polls indicate that the nation stands at a pivotal moment wherein the Conservative Party which has been in power for 14 years has to face a formidable challenge from the Opposition Labour Party.
On one hand, UK current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak eyes another term in office, on the other hand, the opposition Labour Party is expecting a landslide victory. PM Rishi Sunak asserted while he was campaigning that the Conservative Party is still fighting hard. Meanwhile, the opinion polls reveal that the Labour Party is all set for a big win.
The UK operates under a first-past-the-post electoral system. Britons shall cast their vote today from 7 AM to 10 PM local time for 650 constituencies. The party that wins at least 326 seats (majority of the seats) will form the government. Its leader shall become the prime minister. The winners of the elections are likely to be declared on Friday morning.
The first national ballot since 2019 when Boris Johnson’s landslide victory was called unexpectedly by Rishi Sunak six months earlier than required. However, Sunak’s gamble seems to backfire indicating a substantial defeat for his right-wing party. A major survey done by a leading daily suggested that the Conservatives would be reduced to just 53 seats, worse in the history. It further projected a gigantic 383-seat majority for Labour.
