Vishakhapatnam: Defense Minister Rajnath Singh is set to commission India’s second nuclear-powered ballistic missile submarine (SSBN), INS Arighat or S-3, in the presence of top naval officials at a quiet event in Visakhapatnam on Thursday.
While the defense ministry was tight-lipped about the classified project, sources reveal that the 6,000-tonne INS Arighat is set to embark on a long-range patrol of the Indo-Pacific armed with 750-km range nuclear ballistic missile K-15. India’s third SSBN, INS Aridaman or S4, is also set to be commissioned next year, followed shortly after by a fourth SSBN codenamed S-4*, the people said on condition of anonymity.
Nuclear Ballistic Missiles In India & Its Significance
India’s nuclear ballistic missile program is a crucial component of its national security strategy. These long-range missiles are capable of delivering nuclear warheads to targets thousands of kilometers away, serving as a deterrent against potential threats.
India has developed a range of nuclear ballistic missiles, including the Agni series, which has been a significant milestone in its defense capabilities. These missiles are designed to ensure India’s strategic autonomy and credibility as a nuclear power.
The development and deployment of nuclear ballistic missiles have been a subject of debate and concern both domestically and internationally. Some argue that these weapons are necessary for deterrence, while others express concerns about the potential risks of proliferation and nuclear war.
Despite these concerns, India has maintained a responsible approach to its nuclear program, adhering to international non-proliferation norms. The country has consistently emphasized its commitment to peaceful uses of nuclear energy and has taken steps to ensure the safety and security of its nuclear arsenal.
As India continues to modernize its military and pursue its strategic interests, the role of nuclear ballistic missiles will likely remain a critical factor in its defense posture. The country’s ability to maintain a credible nuclear deterrent is seen as essential for safeguarding its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
