Khyber Pakhtunkhwa: Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province declared a rain emergency in several districts with an immediate effect till August 30 after the disaster management officials warned that the Swat River has reached high to very high flood levels.
After the flash floods wreaked havoc in Swat, Sangla, Mingora, Kohistan, and other areas, the emergency was declared on the recommendation of the district administration and Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA).
Pakistan’s Meteorological Department issued a significant flood warning. The department tweeted, “River Indus at Kalabagh 7 Chashma may attain high to very high flood level ranging between 5,50,000 Cusecs to 7,00,000 Cusecs from 1200 PST 27-8-2022 to 1200 PSTof 28-8-2022”.
Floods in the country have affected more than 30 million people with Balochistan and Sindh provinces impacted adversely. The death toll could reach 1,000 and millions are in need of economic aid. Meanwhile, former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan and KP Chief Minister Mahmood Khan met people in flood-affected areas of Dera Ismail Khan and Tank. Imran Khan suggested that building small and medium-sized dams across the country could reduce the impact of floods.
