Russian President Vladimir Putin has made the gift of a portrait to former US President Donald Trump after talks continue to try to stop the war in Ukraine, the Kremlin said Monday. Portraits that were presented to Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff were shown to him in a recent meeting in Moscow earlier this month, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters, according to reports.
Last week, Witkoff revealed the details of the gift — which he was engaged in diplomatic talks with Russian officials about during the conflict in Ukraine — during an interview with Tucker Carlson. Donald Trump was ‘clearly touched’ by the thoughtful gesture from the Russian leader, as he described the portrait as ‘beautiful’. Witkoff heartily called the gift ‘gracious,’ and it was one which will always reflect the amicable feelings of the personal relationship between the two leaders’ even in the face of the fraught geopolitical reality of the circumstances.
During his meeting with Putin, Witkoff also recalled that the Russian president expressed concern and sympathy for Trump after an assassination attempt there last year. Putin had told Witkoff that he prayed for Trump when he had heard the news of the shooting incident during a campaign rally in Pennsylvania, bestowing a personal, emotional flavour to the diplomatic exchange.
