Maldives President Mohammed Muizzu seems to ‘bow down’ to India and persuade Indian soldiers to come back to the country. President Muizzu had threatened India under the influence of China and had expelled Indian soldiers and companies from the government. With the economy going into a bad shape, Muizzu is now Maldives has decided to hand over the management of 28 islands to India. This means that the Indian government will be responsible for working on and maintaining water supply and sewerage projects on these 28 islands.

Maldives President Mohammad Muizzu posted a post on social media. He wrote, I am happy to meet Dr. S Jaishankar on the occasion of officially handing over water and drainage projects in 28 islands of Maldives. I thank the Government of India and especially PM Narendra Modi for always helping Maldives.

Maldives is a major partner of India in the Indian Ocean region. It has been at the center of India’s Neighbourhood First policy since the beginning. Maldives is one of India’s biggest trading partners. Tourism in Maldives runs with the help of India. China had a keen eye on Foreign Minister S Jaishankar’s three-day visit to Maldives.

On this India-Maldives agreement, China’s official newspaper Global Times wrote that Chinese experts have said that China does not want a very special relationship or cooperation with Maldives, while India presents China as a threat for its dominance in this region. However, China’s official newspaper keeping an eye on S Jaishankar’s visit shows that China is struggling but it has failed to spoil the relationship between India and Maldives.
