KABUL – A powerful earthquake struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Friday night, claiming the lives of at least eight people and sending shockwaves across neighboring Pakistan and Northern India.

Residents in parts of Delhi-NCR rushed out of their residences due to the tremors on Friday night. Jolts were also felt in Uttar Pradesh’s Noida and Ghaziabad, among other cities.

In Pakistan, the earthquake was felt in cities and towns including Islamabad, Peshawar, Chitral, Swat, and Shangla, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries in the country.

Casualties and Impact in Afghanistan

The earthquake, which occurred around 9:42 PM local time, was recorded with a magnitude of 5.8 (initially reported as 5.9) at a significant depth of approximately 186 kilometers. Despite the depth, the impact was tragic on the outskirts of the Afghan capital. In the Bagrami district of Kabul province, a house collapsed, killing eight members of the same family. Local authorities confirmed that a two-year-old child was the sole survivor of the collapse and is currently being treated for injuries.

The Ministry of Public Health and disaster management agencies have been placed on high alert as they continue to assess remote areas near the epicenter in the Hindu Kush mountain range, roughly 150 kilometers east of Kunduz.

Earlier in August 2025, a 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck a remote mountainous part of eastern Afghanistan, killing more than 2,200 people, trapping residents under rubble. Most casualties were in Kunar province, where people typically live in wood-and-mud-brick houses along steep valleys.
