Pope Leo XIV asks Israel and Hamas to immediately agree to a truce, as the fighting spreads in Gaza. In front of thousands gathered in Vatican City, the newly elected pontiff wept, tearing up, pledging pity on the hard-hit children and families in the Gaza crisis.

With deep feeling, Leo XIII said, “Mothers and fathers in Gaza regularly send their wails to Heaven as they look at their dead children.” He called on both groups to end their fighting, free all hostages, and adhere to international codes on humanitarian assistance. He urged those in power: “Please bring the violence to a halt,” he said.

On the day after, more than 50 people were hurt in Gaza trying to take food aid, the Pope issued an appeal for peace. The latest ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas have failed, and Israel has increased its activities, making clear that it intends to regain “full control” of the Palestinian land.

To show his support, Pope Leo said, “I am close to all the victims, especially children and their families and I pray for them. I am again asking everyone involved to stop the fighting and back every effort towards dialogue and peace.”

As well as supporting peace in the Middle East, Pope Leo urged an end to the war in Ukraine, which started almost four years ago. President Biden expressed deep worry about more military operations by both Russia and Ukraine and called for more dialogue and efforts to resolve the conflict.

Following Pope Francis, Pope Leo, equally, has stressed peacebuilding and humanitarian compassion, urging all leaders to choose caring for humanity rather than fighting, early in his papacy.
