LONDON — In a development that has sent shockwaves through the United Kingdom, police authorities confirmed on Thursday the arrest of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the younger brother of King Charles III. The 66-year-old was taken into custody on suspicion of misconduct in public office, marking a historic and unprecedented legal escalation involving a member of the British royal family.
The arrest occurred on Thursday morning at Wood Farm, a residence located on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk. Witnesses reported seeing six unmarked police vehicles and approximately eight plain-clothes officers arrive at the property shortly after 8:00 a.m. While Thames Valley Police adhered to national guidelines by not naming the individual, they confirmed that a man in his sixties from Norfolk had been detained and remains in custody. Sources close to the investigation, as well as major news outlets including the BBC, have confirmed the identity of the individual as Mountbatten-Windsor.
The investigation appears to center on allegations that the former royal, during his tenure as the United Kingdom’s special representative for international trade and investment between 2001 and 2011, shared confidential government documents with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Recent revelations from files released by the U.S. Department of Justice reportedly suggest that sensitive trade reports and details regarding official trips were forwarded to Epstein. Assistant Chief Constable Oliver Wright stated that the force opened the formal inquiry following a thorough assessment of these claims to protect the “integrity and objectivity” of the legal process.
In response to the morning’s events, Prime Minister Keir Starmer emphasized that “nobody is above the law.” While Buckingham Palace has yet to release an official statement, the King has previously expressed “profound concern” regarding the allegations. Mountbatten-Windsor, who was stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages in 2022, has consistently denied any wrongdoing.
