Tuesday evening was raked by severe storms that destroyed Pittsburgh and surrounding communities, knocking out power and leaving behind a trail of destruction, as they also resulted in tragic fatalities. The storms boasted wind gusts of up to 70 miles per hour that uprooted trees, wrecked ubiquity, and sent tornado warnings in different districts. And, more than 400,000 homes were left in the dark, as local authorities scrambled to corral it.
Allegheny County officials confirmed two storm-related deaths: the death of one person who was electrocuted in the South Side Slopes neighborhood of Pittsburgh. Referring to the devastation, Forest Hills Mayor Frank Porco declared a state of emergency, and he is requesting that residents refrain from nonessential travel and keep abreast of official borough channels about current conditions.
However, power restoration efforts are ongoing as the damage is widespread. Over 225,000 of Duquesne Light’s customers were without power early Wednesday morning, as the electricity supplies for large portions of Beaver and Allegheny counties were affected. It affected more than 227,000 customers in Pennsylvania, with major outages reported in Allegheny, Armstrong, Indiana, Washington, and Westmoreland counties. First Energy also reported.
Duquesne Light said crews are out assessing the devastation, and it is actively surveying what occurred. As a result of the damage throughout the state, the utility company estimated delays in restoration. They have requested that other utility personnel assist with the recovery efforts.
Residents are being asked to be patient and cautious while crews continue to work to repair downed power lines and other infrastructure. Affected areas are being advised for the community to stay indoors as much as possible, avoid the community, and report any hazardous situation to local authorities. Restoration and cleanup from the storm are expected to be drawn out, and Pittsburgh wrestles on with one of its most severe recent weather events.
