As a result of a mild earthquake in Karachi, more than 100 prisoners managed to escape from jail, and one died during a shootout following the breakout. Officials stated that on Monday morning, the earthquake struck, which made authorities remove inmates from their cells to make sure they were safe at a prison in Sindh province.
Officer Kashif Abbasi revealed that as a result of the power failure, 216 prisoners who were not involved in terrorism cases used this chance to escape from detention. It was just as dawn was breaking that a group of men outside their cell, due to an evacuation plan, attacked the guards at the prison. The robbers got to the weapons, overpowered the guards, started to shoot and ran away from the bank. One person in custody died during the shooting, and three security members were hurt.
According to Abbasi, 78 of the escapees have returned, and he assured that things are under control. Police are conducting exhaustive searches and carrying out raids to catch the final fugitives. None of the people who escaped were ever convicted of terrorism, nor had any connection to militant groups, he repeated.
The Home Minister of Sindh pointed out that the incident happened during a practice evacuation, apparently for an earthquake. The official promised that authorities are carefully examining what happened and will update safety measures to stop such incidents in the future.
After low-magnitude earthquakes shook the city of Karachi within a day, the jailbreak happened. The Meteorological Department of Pakistan reported that the 3.2, 3.6 and 3.2 magnitude earthquakes occurred in Gadap and Quaidabad, Karachi. At about 1:05 a.m., the first tremor was felt, and other tremors soon happened one after another.
Because of this incident, many are worried about how prepared Pakistan’s prisons are and how emergencies should be handled.
