SUDAN: Operation Kaveri an initiative by the Indian govt to evacuate its stranded citizens in the battle hit nation- Sudan was launched on Monday.
“Operation Kaveri gets underway to bring back our citizens stranded in Sudan. About 500 Indians have reached Port Sudan. More on their way. Our ships and aircraft are set to bring them back home. Committed to assist all our bretheren in Sudan,” tweeted Mr Jaishankar.
Earlier on Sunday, the foreign ministry quoted that India is making “every effort to ensure the safety and security of its citizens stranded in Sudan”.
“We are closely monitoring the complex and evolving security situation in Sudan. We are also coordinating closely with various partners for the safe movement of those Indians who are stranded in Sudan and would like to be evacuated,” the ministry said in a statement. It added that two Indian Air Force C-130J have been positioned on standby in Jeddah.
Describing the security situation in Sudan as complex and evolving, the Centre on Sunday had said it was pursuing multiple options to evacuate the 3,000 Indian citizens stuck in the country. Its decision to deploy the Super Hercules military transport aircraft followed the high-level meeting PM Narendra Modi chaired on April 21 in which he asked officials to ready contingency evacuation plans
5 Indians on Monday were evacuated through French Air Force flight and were brought to France’s military base in Djibouti along with people of over 28 other nationalities. Another 2 were airlifted by Saudi Authorities on Saturday.
The battle for power in Sudan has deepend eversince it began. Rival military factions – the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces (RSF) continued dropping bombs despite a 72-hour truce declared for Eid.
