On Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced that Maria Corina Machado, a leading opposition figure and democracy activist in Venezuela, is the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize laureate. It is a move that will cause a huge political wave globally, including at the White House. President Donald Trump, who has frequently boasted of his mediation efforts in at least seven international disputes, was already interested in being awarded the prestigious prize. His predecessor, the previous President, Barack Obama, had also been recognized with the Nobel Peace Prize in 2009, due to his attempts to reinforce international diplomatic relations and cooperation.
In response to questions about Trump taking credit for the peace prize, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has stressed that its judgments are strictly informed by the work and purpose of Alfred Nobel, who was the founder of the Nobel Prize. In a press interview, the chair of the committee, Jørgen Watne Frydnes, said, “This committee sits in a room crowded with the portraits of all of the laureates, and there is courage and integrity in that room. We make our decisions on the principles that we discuss only with Alfred Nobel.”
Over the years, Trump has been nominated for the prize by different countries like Russia, Rwanda, Gabon, Azerbaijan, and Cambodia. His name has also been presented to international leaders, including the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. These endorsements notwithstanding, the committee has observed that the process is not easy and is independent amid the pressures of campaigns and media coverage of possible laureates.
Frydnes pointed out that every year, the Nobel Committee gets thousands of letters by individuals who recommend their candidates to the committee on the basis that they have contributed to peace. These recommendations are assessed by the committee, and a high level of emphasis is laid on courage, integrity, and practical inputs towards peace activities.
