On Tuesday, North Korea fired an undetermined projectile into its eastern coast waters, as reported by the South Korean military, in another act of military aggression following changing US defense priorities in the Korean Peninsula.
According to the Joint Chiefs of Staff in South Korea, at least one projectile had been launched towards the East Sea and the Coast Guard in Japan claimed that an object which had been suspected to be a ballistic missile had probably fallen into the sea already. Governments in the two nations indicated that they were still evaluating further information.
This would be the second ballistic missile launched by Pyongyang this year in case it was true. This comes just after there has been a high-level of tension earlier this month after North Korea alleged that its airspace was being intruded upon by South Koreans on drones. Seoul has also refuted official role saying it is investigating reports that the unmanned aerial vehicle might have been flown by civilians. North Korea claimed to have launched a hypersonic missile after the initial launch in early January.
The most recent introduction was by the US Undersecretary of Defense in Policy, Elbridge Colby, who paid a visit to Seoul stating that South Korea is a major ally that can play a larger part in its defense. His visit was in the wake of the unveiling of the new US National Defense Strategy that requires South Korea to assume the biggest role in discouraging North Korea as part of the wider Washington reevaluating its focus on the defense of the US homeland.
The US missile test is also coupled with a new tension in the US- South Korea relationships following the threat of President Donald Trump to impose tariffs of up to 25 percent on South Korean imports. The failure of the legislature in Seoul to codify a bilateral trade agreement achieved last year was another point of tension that Trump brought to an already complicated security situation in the region.
