New York: Hurricane IDA has caused huge destruction in the New York City Area, swamping the region and killing almost 8. A state of emergency was announced early Thursday, after the remnants of the hurricane barreled into the region with furious, wind-driven rain halted subway services, destroyed homes in New Jersey and resulted in a tornado warning for the Bronx.
The Met Department on Wednesday night recorded 3.1 inches in Central Park in an hour and crashed a record set only last week where only 1.94 inches of rain was recorded in the region during Tropical Storm Henri.
This was the first time in the history of the NY City when the National Weather Service issued a flash flood emergency. At around 11:30 pm on Wednesday, Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency saying, New York City “ was enduring a historic weather event” with “record-breaking rain across the city, brutal flooding and dangerous conditions on our roads”. Mayor of Passiac city in New Jersey Hector C. Lora declared a state of emergency too.
As per the sources, the victims of the floods included individuals from ages 2 to 66 years. Residents were instructed to stay indoors and stay off the roads. City buses turned into amphibious vehicles, ploughing through several feet of water, Subway stations roared with the sounds of rushing water that cascaded through platforms and stairs.
