The Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu has caused some controversy by publishing an article by Jacobin, the socialist, anti-Israel, American journal, stating that Jeffrey Epstein was once employed by Israeli intelligence, and even interfered with Israel elections. The tweet was made just before the onset of the Shabbat, attracting more attention to the fact that Netanyahu chose to make the story more noticeable.

The article, titled Jeffrey Epstein Claimed to Have Interfered in the Elections in Israel, refers to the new leaked text messages of how Epstein had been consulting former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barak on the 2019 Israeli parliamentary election. The report indicates that emails leaked and historical revelations indicate that Epstein and Barak were much closer than it is recognized, which adds to the debate on their relationship. Netanyahu and Barak are well-known political opponents and their relationship has been marked with a number of hostile exchanges in the past hence the move by Netanyahu to publish the article is quite remarkable.

Regardless of the allegations that have been flying around over the years, there is no tangible proof that Epstein had any connection to the Mossad or any governmental operation of the Israeli intelligence services. A large part of the speculation has been based on circumstantial facts, such as Epstein being a Jew, traveling around Israel, and associating with several high-ranking Israelis, such as Barak. These aspects have constantly been used to create conspiracy theories without generating facts.

It is not clear why Netanyahu has mentioned the article. Other pundits have indicated that maybe it is an effort to paint Barak in poor light particularly in the current political tensions in Israel. Some assume that it can be due to the increased criticisms on the activities of Epstein, especially in the United States.

It is also the case that the renewed attention is associated with a notable growth of Washington: the two chambers of the U.S. Congress have reached an agreement to force the Department of Justice to publicly release its files on Epstein. The measure went on and passed by a vote of 4271 in the House and was unanimously passed in the Senate by a fast-tracked process.
