World: Naftali Bennett on Sunday, took charge of the Kennest as the PM of the country defeating Benjamin Netanyahu government with a razor thin majority of 60-59 in the 120 seat chamber.
Known as ‘king Bibi’ by the right wing supporters and condemned as ‘crime minister’ by critics, Netanyahu, 71 served as the PM of the country for 12 consecutive years. In his exit speech as a PM, he assailed the upcoming government saying, “if it’s our destiny to be in the opposition, we’ll do so with our heads high until we take down this bad government and return to lead the country our way.” On the contrary, Bennett celebrated the diversity and warned of polarization within the country.
After 4 elections in 2years, Bennett’s incoming government breaks the longest political glacier and ushers in the most diverse collaboration Israel.
Naftali Bennett, 49 is a right wing Jewish nationalist who served as defence minister under Netanyahu. Bennett will focus on domestic issues during his two years as prime minister, before he hands the reins to Lapid according to their coalition agreement.
These will include the relationship between religion and state, the cost of living, and quality of life issues. Israel also has not passed a budget since March 2018; the newly anointed government has three months to enact one or the Knesset will dissolve and the country will once again head to elections by law.
