In an unusually protracted campaign, Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu alleges on Thursday that ‘the leftist Deep State’ is weaponising the justice system against him to insulate the rule of the people. It was posted first from Netanyahu’s official prime ministerial account on X (formerly Twitter).
“Once the politicians on the strong right win an election, in America and Israel, when a leaders of the strong righties win elections, they weaponize the justice system to thwart the people’s will. Neither place is where they will win!” Netanyahu wrote, “We stand strong together.”
But an hour later, that post was removed from the official account. Netanyahu’s personal account then re-shared the same message, sparking a big discussion and speculation.
As Netanyahu faces an ongoing investigation into an alleged funnelling of thousands of dollars from Qatar to people around him, the premier made his strong remark. Hebrew media reported that a pair of suspects were being held and questioned in the investigation. Thursday morning, the other suspects were interrogated while one was released under unspecified conditions.
That comes at a politically sensitive time after reports the Israeli prime minister is following in the footsteps of former U.S. President Donald Trump when it comes to tackling what he describes as the ‘deep state.’ On Sunday, a site reported that Netanyahu recently spoke about removing Shin Bet security agency chief Ronen Bar from his post. Netanyahu’s recent visit to Washington, where the visitor reportedly was stirred by Trump’s moves to appoint loyalists to key positions – a tactic used to counter institutional opposition – has been cited as a factor behind this decision.
Netanyahu’s accusations against the justice system, and the later deletion and remainder of his statement, have now fired more political upheaval for Israel.
