With the political uncertainty experienced in Nepal ever since the violent protests led to the toppling of the government, President Ram Chandra Paudel has made a plea to the people, asking them to be patient as an interim Prime Minister is sought to be finalized. In a letter of September 11, Paudel stated that he is operating within the constitutional structure to protect democracy and solve the crisis. The letter said, “I am thinking and trying my best to get out of the present hard-going situation in the country within the constitutional framework and to save democracy.”

The call is matched with the increasing pressure on Gen-Z leaders, who have been leading the rebellion, to present a consensus candidate. Sources indicate that President and Army Chief Ashok Raj Sigdel have made it communicated to the young representatives that it is entirely their responsibility to suggest a name. The responsibility lies with them; thus, they cannot follow up on the President and the army in the future.

On Thursday, the dialogue between the President and the army and Gen-Z leaders resumed, but still no conclusive decision was made, like in previous meetings. The names of potential challengers to the interim premiership are not fixed, and a number of marquee names are being discussed. They include former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, Kulman Ghising, the former chairperson of the power board in Nepal, and Balendra Shah, the popular mayor of Kathmandu.

Dozens of young citizens were waiting with bated breath outside the army headquarters, where negotiations were going on. To the majority, the selection of an interim Prime Minister is a test of time, whether the new movement is up to its promises of change.

In a letter to the population, President Paudel reassured citizens that the process is going on and that they should have faith in the process: A solution to the problem is being sought as soon as possible to meet the demands of the agitating citizens.
