On Saturday, several thousands of people came out into the streets throughout Mexico in protest of increased corruption, crime, and impunity. The protesters led by the Gen Z were mostly inspired by older supporters of opposition parties. Although the greater part of the march was peaceful, the situation became tense toward the end resulting in violent confrontations between a group of youthful protesters and the police forces.

The capital security secretary, Pablo Vazquez stated that 120 were injured in that confrontation, 100 of whom were police officers. It is claimed that there are protesters that threw stones, fireworks, sticks, and metal chains at the police. A number of protestors also joined hands with the police shields and other gears in the confusion. Suddenly bursting out into violence overwhelmed an otherwise big demonstration that had started peacefully but packaged.

The violence occurs when Mexico is tusseling over a number of high profile violent offenses such as the recent murder of a renowned mayor in Michoacan. Such incidences notwithstanding, President Claudia Sheinbaum still enjoys impressive approval in the eyes of the people. Her rule is however being questioned with increasing levels of frustration being voiced by citizens on how insecurity continues to prevail and nothing is being done by the government to address the issue.

During the buildup to the protest, President Sheinbaum accused the right-wing opposition groups of trying to infiltrate the demonstrations headed by Gen Z. She further indicated that the social media bots were being used by these parties to artificially inflate the number of turnouts, as well as, to create online buzz. These claims have been refuted by the opposition leaders who termed it an effort to dampen the validity of public dissent.

The ongoing investigations of the confrontations emphasize the ever-growing political involvement of young people in Mexico and their necessity to see some changes. The government is now under pressure to act at least to the violence and even the general issues of the demonstrators.
