A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck the eastern coast of Kamchatka on Friday morning. Five aftershocks were felt, each measuring 5.8 in intensity. This has prompted a tsunami alert. Waves of 30 to 62 cm high were observed on the coast. A 7.8 magnitude tremor was felt near the island of Kamchatka. The strong tremors left people terrified. Several videos of the earthquake have surfaced on social media, showing furniture, cars, and lights shaking violently. Russia has experienced four earthquakes of magnitudes greater than 7 in the past three months.
Kamchatka Governor Vladimir Solodov said all emergency services were on high alert, but no casualties had been reported so far. Four major earthquakes of magnitude 7.0 or greater have been recorded in the region, including the one that struck today.
According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck 128 kilometers from the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 10 kilometers. Russia’s State Geophysical Service reported the quake’s magnitude as 7.4.
The governor said on Telegram, “This morning is once again testing the patience of the people of Kamchatka. There are currently no reports of any casualties. I appeal to everyone to remain calm. A tsunami warning has been issued for the eastern coast of Kamchatka. The public is being alerted. Investigations have begun for damage to social institutions and residential buildings following the earthquake. A tsunami warning has also been issued for parts of the Kuril Islands.”
Russia’s Kamchatka has been hit by earthquakes before. A massive 7.4 magnitude quake struck on Saturday (September 13), prompting a tsunami warning. According to the US Geological Survey (USGS), the quake struck 111 kilometers (69 miles) east of the Russian city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the administrative center of the Kamchatka region, at a depth of 39.5 kilometers.
