In the latest exchange of fire, Iran fired a new round of missiles at northern Israel early Saturday morning, sirens went off in the area, and civilians were urged to shelter in place. Israeli-occupied Golan Heights and a number of northern Israeli towns were put on high alert as the tension between the two regional powers rose to a new, dangerous level.

This is in revenge for Israeli overnight airstrikes, under the codename Operation Rising Lion, that attacked Iranian major nuclear and military facilities. Iranian state media reported that several of the top Iranian military officials were killed in the strikes, including the powerful chief of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), Hossein Salami, six nuclear scientists and Chief of Staff General Mohammad Bagheri.

As a counter-offensive to Israel, Iran first sent more than 100 drones into Israeli airspace. Israel, which expected the assault, said it shot down most of these drones before they could get to population centres. Nevertheless, the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) reported evacuations in areas where projectiles were launched, and air-raid sirens were sounded in Tel Aviv because a missile threat in Yemen was also identified.

In justification of the offensive, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the strikes were a “limited military action” that was meant to cripple Iranian nuclear capabilities and destroy its ballistic missile program. Netanyahu claimed that this operation will last as long as it is necessary to eliminate this threat.

Afterwards, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, the Supreme Leader of Iran, reshuffled the military leadership of the Nation with the appointment of Major General Amir Hatami as the new Chief Commander of the Iranian Army. The shuffle is an indication that Tehran is prepared to act with resolve and restructure its defence machinery in one of the most severe escalations in the region in recent history.
