Nepal KP Sharma Oli, a former prime minister, has overwhelmingly been voted by his party members to remain in charge and this puts the veteran statesman in the lead to guide the organisation towards national elections due in the coming year. Representatives of the Communist Party of Nepal Unified Marxist Leninist (CPN-UML) voted during a two-day long general convention at Kathmandu, where Oli was overwhelmingly elected.

The leader was a landslide re-election winner who according to party officials garnered 1,663 votes, which is almost three times as many as his closest competitor Ishwar Pokhrel, who had 564. The results were confirmed by Rajendra Gautam who heads the publicity department of the party which further indicated the dominance of Oli in the party.

The re-election is only a few months after Oli resigned as prime minister in September, following a demonstration led by the youth that drove his government out of power. Nepal is presently operated under a caretaker government and is to have general elections in March.

Oli has also been a powerful party leader despite the dramatic events that caused him to leave office. Known by many as KP alone, he has built an image of the central figure of the party, with rallies consisting of huge cut ups and banners saying, KP Ba (father), we love you.

Oli resigned soon following a series of violent demonstrations that witnessed his house and hundreds of other buildings, such as parliament and court complexes, being burned down. In a letter he resigned, he indicated that his resignation was meant to facilitate a political solution in the country and to alleviate tension.

The riot was fatal and no less than 77 individuals were killed. The anger about a temporary social media ban sparked protests, which further increased public frustration with the stagnation in the economy and the long-term suspicions of political misconduct. The fact that Oli has returned to head the party is an indication that he is still interested in playing the central role in the tumultuous Nepal politics, as the nation approaches the election.
