Investigators of South Korea have disclosed that the Boeing 737-800 operated by Jeju Air, which had crashed in an emergency landing in December, could have flown even with one engine not functioning due to a bird strike. The update indicates that the left engine, which had less damage compared to the right one, was shut down 19 seconds after the event was experienced, which could seriously affect the fortunes of that aircraft.

The plane had to make an emergency landing at belly landing at Muan Airport because the crew had pulled up the landing gear. It went in excess of their runway and crashed into an embankment, igniting in flames. This was the worst disaster in Aviation history on South Korean soil, with only 2 out of the 181 people on board surviving.

According to the findings of investigators available in an update dated July 19, it can be seen that the right engine had a surge during which flames and smoke were released, but could still generate sufficient thrust to allow the continuation of a flight. What is, however, unclear is why the crew decided to power off the less-damaged left engine.

The investigation that is still in progress is aimed at reconstructing the technical state of the aircraft and the awareness of the pilots in the course of the emergency. Experts warn against drawing hasty conclusions, which is true since most of the aviation disasters follow a combination of factors as opposed to an error.

The accident has been likened to the crash of 1989 in Kegworth, England, where pilots had shut one of the running engines after being struck by birds similarly. Such is the tragedy that led to serious changes in regulations, especially in crew communication and emergency procedures.

This was the most recent discovery to cause more questions about the crew of the Jeju Air, who acted, as well as training and decision-making policies. The ultimate report will be released in months, and the relatives of the victims want the truth and responsibility to find a reason behind the tragic crash.
