The FBI has issued a nationwide alert warning Americans about a growing scam involving fraudulent discount medical insurance plans. These deceptive schemes are bilking vulnerable individuals out of millions of dollars across the country. Scammers prey on those seeking affordable healthcare options, enticing them with promises of low premiums and extensive coverage that ultimately fail to materialize.

These fraudulent operations typically begin with unsolicited contact through phone calls, text messages, or emails from unknown entities. They employ high-pressure tactics, urging quick sign-ups for “limited-time offers” or touting free services with concealed fees to lure unsuspecting victims. Often, they mimic legitimate insurance providers to appear credible.

Victims are left in a devastating position. Believing they have adequate coverage, they incur medical expenses only to discover their “insurance” offers no reimbursement, leaving them to shoulder the entire financial burden. Some have even been locked into these sham plans, facing difficulties in canceling and halting unauthorized charges to their accounts.

The FBI urges the public to exercise extreme caution when approached with unsolicited medical insurance offers. It is crucial to verify the legitimacy of any insurance plan by checking with state insurance commissioners or the Better Business Bureau. Consumers should confirm that their existing healthcare providers accept the plan and meticulously review all policy documents before enrolling. Avoiding upfront payments and resisting high-pressure sales tactics are also vital protective measures. Anyone suspecting they have fallen victim to this scam should immediately file a report with the Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) at www.ic3.gov, providing as much detail as possible about the fraudulent scheme
