Thursday witnessed an incident which has attracted a lot of attention when an Israeli reservist soldier drove his car intentionally into a Palestinian man who was in the road praying in the West Bank. Reports given by the news agencies that used the Israeli military claimed that the soldier had earlier shot in the region before he shot the man.
Israeli military confirmed that evidence of the incidence depicted a footage of an armed person running over the Palestinian man. The concerned soldier was found to be a reservist and his service in the military has since been discontinued as a result of his conduct. The military said the actions of the reservist were a gross infringement of his authority and his weapon was taken away.
The accused was arrested in the same day and put on house arrest of five days pending the further investigation. The officials observed that the Palestinian man is lucky to have got out of the attack without any injury. Video records of the event that were shared on social media reveal the reservist wearing plain clothes with a gun resting on his shoulder. The video footage of him running over the man, waving his hands, and talking to the man and driving away, and the victim later gets off the ground and takes away.
This incidence has questioned the activities of the military personnel and their responsibility particularly in the tense areas like the West Bank where there exists in most cases conflict between the Israeli forces and Palestinian civilians. Human rights organizations have criticized the assault focusing on the fact that a targeted attack on civilians even in volatile areas is a gross violation of ethical and legal norms.
Israeli officials are also carrying out an in-depth investigation into the case to know what happened when the reservist was acting and to take the necessary actions.
