At least 22 children were among the 60 Palestinians killed early Wednesday as the Israeli airstrikes pounded several parts of Gaza, Gaza’s Health Ministry and local hospitals reported. Most casualties were reported in Jabaliya, which is one of the most densely populated areas in the northern part of Gaza, with almost 50 people being killed there. The deaths were further reported in the southern city of Khan Younis, adding up to 10 more deaths. The scathing air strikes took place just one day after Hamas freed an Israeli-American hostage in a deal facilitated by the United States, and at the time when former U.S. President Donald Trump was in Saudi Arabia
Israel’s military has not officially said anything about the latest strikes but had issued evacuation warnings to residents of Jabaliya late Tuesday, using the presence of militant infrastructure, including rocket launch sites, as a reason. Rescue workers worked all night digging out bodies and those of several children from under the debris using their bare hands and cellphone flashlights.
Israel would not cease its offensive, according to the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, in a statement made by his office. He swore that the Israeli military was going to increase its footprint in Gaza and go back into the region “with great strength to complete the mission,” with the mission being to dismantle Hamas.
However, the war in Gaza flared up in 2023 when Hamas-led militants launched an unprecedented attack at southern Israel, killing 1,200 people. Since then, Israel’s retaliatory campaign has killed more than 52,800 Palestinians, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry. The tally involves thousands of women and children, though the ministry does not mention the number of casualties that were civilians and those who were militants.
The current military operations have leveled wide areas of the Gaza urban environment and displaced nearly 90% of its people. In the meantime, attention to the issue from the international community increases. Emmanuel Macron, the president of France, condemned Netanyahu’s blockade on humanitarian aid, calling it “a disgrace”.
