A total of at least 15, including three journalists, died on Monday when an Israeli airstrike hit the fourth floor of Nasser Hospital, the principal medical centre in southern Gaza, as reported by the Associated Press from the Gaza health ministry. Among the journalists who were killed were Al Jazeera and Reuters representatives. The ministry explained the attack as a double-tap attack with a second missile striking shortly after the first hit, injuring rescue teams who had rushed to assist the wounded.

The Israeli military did not comment immediately after requests to comment on the strike on the hospital. Attacks on medical facilities. Although never formally admitted by Israel, multiple hospitals and clinics were hit during the Israeli campaign against Hamas in Gaza, most recently in December and in early January. Israel has maintained that its activities are aimed at militants, some of whom operate in civilian and medical infrastructures.

The largest hospital in southern Gaza, Nasser Hospital in Khan Younis, has withstood repeated bombardment and attacks over the last 22 months of continuous conflict. The facility is exerted under a high-pressure environment since it records having a shortage of medical supplies, equipment, and staff. In June of this year, an earlier attack on Nasser Hospital resulted in three deaths and ten injuries, and Israel claimed that the attack was indeed a hit on a Hamas command and control centre based at the hospital.

The wider conflict has produced cataclysmic results for the Palestinian people. Today, at least 62,686 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the conflict, but that number does not make a distinction between combatants and civilians, according to the Ministry of Health of Gaza. It asserts that about fifty per cent of the deaths were of women and children. The UN, as well as independent experts, have characterised these numbers as the most accurate casualty data; however, Israel has disagreed with the numbers and has not published its own casualty figures.
