In a dire threat to the Hamas group, Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz on Friday added that Gaza City would be completely destroyed should Hamas fail to abide by the requirements of Israel. His statement is amid preparations by Israel to intensify military attacks in the region, months after fighting in the region intensified. The warning issued by Katz came after the Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently gave approval to the Israeli military to take control of the city of Gaza.
Katz also stated that cities will be reduced to ashes and all doors of Hades will open on the heads of Hamas, referring to the fact that Hamas could be reduced to beaches of ashes just as it is being the case, in Rafah and Beit Hanoun, levels of devastation to which they had been subjected. His position was that the set of demands that Israel has is still non-negotiable, and he was referring to the release of all the hostages who are held by Hamas and the disarmament of Hamas completely.
Hamas has, however, denied these terms. The group has declared that they are ready to free prisoners only in exchange for cessation of hostilities, but not disarmament, without asking them to create a Palestinian state. Such a stalemate has increased already existing tensions in the region and portends a long-term humanitarian crisis.
The present war erupted following a large-scale attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, inption of which more than 1,200 people, mostly civilians and resulted in kidnapping 251 people were kidnapped. A good number of the hostages have been discharged following ceasefire agreements or otherwise.
The Gaza Health Ministry shows that at least 62,192 Palestinians have been killed since the start of the war, and they do not distinguish between civilians and militants. The cumulative human loss and increasing war actions suggest a worsening humanitarian emergency in Gaza, and local experts fear terrible devastation in case the current conflict is not stopped as it is.
