The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) announced on Sunday that they had struck an underground facility of Hezbollah in southern Lebanon, directing its airstrike at military infrastructure, including underground facilities. According to the Israeli army, the strike was performed in the Beaufort Ridge area where “military activity was identified.” The army continued that the existence of the site and its conduct represent a violation of the agreements between Israel and Lebanon.
The move follows recent regional tensions over the war in Gaza, and expresses ongoing hostility between Israel and the Iran-backed Hizbullah. The two sides fought for more than a year, with clashes which erupted into two months of open warfare last year. In November, a ceasefire agreement was reached in an attempt to stop the hostilities, and under that agreement, the Lebanese army, assisted by UN peacekeepers, has been stationed in southern Lebanon to demilitarise Hezbollah’s infrastructure and to maintain stability.
Despite the cessation of hostilities, Israel has continued a policy of targeted attacks on Hezbollah installations in Lebanon, saying it will do so until the group disarms. The hits reflect Israel’s resolve to keep Hezbollah from rebuilding military capabilities that may pose a threat to its security.
Meanwhile, under pressure from the United States, the Lebanese government has called on the Lebanese army to draw up a plan to confiscate Hezbollah’s weapons by the end of the year. Hezbollah, however, has pledged to fight against any moves to disarm it, which poses a threat to confrontations in the foreseeable future.
The characteristics of the situation in the region are therefore characterised by a complex security situation, characterised by the fact that ceasefire agreements and international interventions coexist with armed activity. The IDF operation at Beaufort Ridge is a reminder that the Israeli-Hezbollah conflict is not yet resolved and that stability in the region remains extremely volatile.
