On Sunday, the Israeli military stated that it had launched attacks against an energy infrastructure facility south of the Yemeni capital, Sanaa, that supports the Iran-backed movement Houthi. Israeli media said the Haziz power station was hit, allegedly by the Israeli navy, in an operation Israel termed a retaliatory strike. The attack follows several other attacks by the Houthis against Israel, such as the firing of missiles and drones towards Israel, most of which have been targeted.

According to its official declaration, the Israeli forces took the action in order to prevent any further Houthi aggression. The step was a direct response to persistent efforts by the Houthis to attack Israel, according to the statement.

In the meantime, Al Masirah TV, run by the Houthis, said that the power station was attacked, and it was an act of aggression. The channel stated that a fire was ignited by some generators being knocked out of service, which local teams could get under control. Witnesses in Sanaa reported hearing two or more explosions in the pre-dawn hours.

Houthis, who support Iran, have attacked with increased intensity over the last few months by citing that they are standing with Palestinians during the conflict in Gaza. They have also been involved in direct attacks on Israel as well as attacks on international shipping lanes in the Red Sea which have elicited military retaliation against them not only by Israel but also by the United States and the United Kingdom.

Washington and London added several attacks on Houthi facilities in Yemen early this year. As recently as May, the U.S. even struck a temporary cease-fire with the Houthis to end its bombing campaign in exchange for stopping its Red Sea shipping raids undertaken by the latter. Nevertheless, the group maintained that the agreement did not apply to Israel, which still remained within the stated range of operations of the group.
